Cradle of Croatia culture

From ancient times, it has been believed that the island of Krk is fatefully connected to the number seven: in the seventh century, Croats settled it, seven times it successfully defended against pirates, the seventh in line, the Frankopan prince, was the last prince of Krk, and today the island of Krk has seven centers. Thanks to its exceptional cultural heritage, primarily the Glagolitic monuments among which the famous Baška Tablet stands out, Krk is also called the "cradle of Croatian culture".

The most important natural wealth of our part of Krk region, is the specific power and beauty of the sea and the Dubašnica forests.

In our closest surroundings, only 2.5 km away, stands the bell tower of the church of St. Apollinaris. It was first mentioned in 1153. Once the center of this area, it was deserted due to malaria. St. Apollinaris is located along the route of the beautiful Dubašnica hiking trails, so you can easily walk there.

If you prefer walking by the sea, we have the most wonderful promenade located just 5.2 km away. The construction of the Paradise Road, a promenade from Haludovo beach to Njivice, was initiated by the Haludovo Commission in 1934. The total length of the promenade is 1,900 meters, and the high presence of aerosols makes this promenade extremely therapeutic for human health.

Just a little bit above the village of Sv. Vid, approximately 6.5 km away from Heritage Villa Laurel, you can explore the archaeological site of Cickini, which originated on the road connecting two ancient cities, Fulfinum and Curicum, in early antiquity. Additionally, another rich archaeological site, 14.5 km away from Villa Laurel, is the ancient Roman city of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum, a place you must visit.

If you want to experience the charms of the beautiful neighboring islands of Cres and Lošinj, the ferry port of Valbiska is located just 10 kilometers away from us. It's definitely worth taking the opportunity for a day trip and swimming, with just a half-hour boat ride.

Make sure to plan a visit to the City of Krk and the old Frankopan castle. It was constructed in several building phases, from the 12th to the late 18th century. This castle was the central and last point of defense for the city. Today, within the castle walls, traditional summer cultural events are held, which can enrich your vacation. The City of Krk is located 11.5 km from our villa. The same distance will be needed to visit the famous healing mud on the Meline beach in Soline. Due to the shallow sea, sunbathing and swimming start here as early as spring, and it is believed that the mud and sun on the body treat bone pain and rheumatic diseases.

A little further from there, acres of vineyards await. The local variety of Krk vineyards, Žlahtina, derives its name from the Old Slavic word "žlahta," meaning noble. Wine enthusiasts during their stay do not forget to visit the Vrbnik field and Vrbnik, a historic town of Glagolitic script, books, and Žlahtina wine. From Heritage Villa Laurel, it will take you 19 km to get there.

When erosional and epeirogenetic movements occurred in the Earth's crust, the sea penetrated into Puntarska draga around Košljun, and as it was a hill at the time, Košljun became an island. This process lasted for millennia. Located 18.5 km from us, today accessible by boat from the village of Punat, the island Košljun is known for the Franciscan monastery which also possesses a rich library with around 30,000 books. Among them is Ptolemy's atlas printed in Venice in 1511 (one of only three preserved).

Further from that direction, moving towards the south of the Island of Krk is Baška. Known for its sandy beaches, it holds one of the greatest Croatian cultural treasures. The Baška Tablet is of exceptional historical importance as it is the oldest Croatian monument in Glagolitic script dating back to the 11th century, almost four centuries before the discovery of America. Look for the Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor near Baška where its replica is kept today. Its importance lies in the fact that it represents the earliest known monument mentioning the name of a Croatian king in Croatian. The original is preserved in the building of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb.

Overall, Krk invites travelers to experience the beauty, history, and culture of Croatia's largest island.
